The election of Barack Obama as the
1st African American President of the United States in a context of global recession and crisis has led to a sense of hope for a better world with less wars and the advancement of human
brotherhood. Son of an African married to an African-American, he has given a sense of pride, dignity, and hopefulness to people of African ancestry, and has also in a sense contributed to the
renewal of panafricanism, as he has reconnected the broken bonds of continental Africans and Africans in the Diaspora. Some believed that his election would mark a moment of unique opportunity
and would create an environment to live in more decent conditions for the global African community to negotiate a better future.
After three years in office, President Obama has failed to live up to his promise to deliver "change we can believe in" at home and abroad. He did not undertake any paradigm shift in the
structure of the American economy and the American Africa foreign policy marked by hegemonic and imperialistic interests. Most Americans (99 percent) continue to plow under the yoke of greed,
injustice, foreclosure, and unemployment, whereas at the helm, the 1 percent of the population representing the managers of big banks and corporations continuously receive fat bonuses. In such an
environment, minorities namely African Americans are feeling the brunt of the economic downturn and have fared far worse than the rest of the country. According to the statistics from the 2010 US
Census Bureau, the median white household wealth was about $113,000 , for black families about $5,700, and Latinos about $6,300. For African Americans unemployment hit 16.7% in August, its
highest level since 1984, according to the Labor Department. The number of African Americans living under the poverty line -- which is $11,139 for an individual in 2010 -- rose to 10.7 million,
up 1.6 %. In all, 27.4 % of African Americans are living in poverty.
On the foreign policy front, his achievements are from being glorious, namely vis-à-vis Africa. Obama supported the military intervention of NATO, France, and the UN in Africa "in the name of
democracy", thus consolidating Western hegemony, replacing nationalistic African leaders with subservient proxies willing to perpetuate super-exploitative and neo-liberal policies, as it is
epitomized in Libya and in Ivory Coast.
